Job Title: Chief Executive

Reporting to: The Chair and Board of Trustees

Salary: Circa £80,000

Location: London

Purpose

The Chief Executive of the NAT (The National AIDS Trust) provides positive, collaborative and credible leadership to the NAT to continue to shape the culture, strategy and partnerships of the organisation, in order to ensure the Trust helps more people, more effectively by keeping a relentless focus on effectiveness, quality and efficiency.

The Chief Executive of NAT, in partnership with the Board,  is responsible for the success of NAT. Together, the Board and Chief Executive ensure NAT’s continuing relevance to its communities of interest and the accomplishment of its mission and  objectives.

The Board delegates the responsibility for the direction and day to day management of NAT to its Chief Executive in accordance with the policies which it has established. The Chief Executive leads and manages NAT to ensure that NAT delivers its mission and strategy and fulfils its charitable objects in accordance with best practice and the requirements of the Charity Commission.

Accountabilities and Responsibilites

Mission, Strategic Policy and Planning

  • Assist the Board to develop the values, mission, vision and goals of NAT and support the Chair and Trustees to ensure that they shape and deliver NAT’s mission and strategy.
  • Inform the Board of relevant trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy development and campaigning. Develop policy proposals for Board discussion and decision as agreed with the Chair.
  • Responsible for the development of strategic plans and their translation into operational plans to achieve the organisation’s objectives and reporting progress to the Board.
  • Keep the Board fully informed of the condition of NAT, identifying problems and opportunities and addressing them, bringing those which are appropriate to the Board or its relevant committees.
  • Maintain an overview of developments in human resource management, voluntary sector governance and fundraising.
  • Executive responsibility for ensuring the organisation discharges its constitutional and legal obligations.

Leadership and Management

  • Motivate and lead the staff of NAT to enable them to achieve NAT’s mission and objectives.
  • Provide visible and empowering leadership to our staff, nurturing an inclusive and values-driven organisation in which diversity and inclusion is integral to everything that we do.​
  • Have general oversight of all NAT’s activities, manage day to day operations and ensure a smoothly functioning efficient organisation, including reviewing and developing operational systems to maximise efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Promote NAT’s corporate philosophy and values ensuring they are consistently applied across the organisation and assure a positive workplace culture that recruits, retains and develops high quality staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain an HR system which ensures leadership and maximises the potential of staff and which reflects the mission and values of NAT.
  • Ensure that strategic and operational plans are in place to guide the organisation in achieving its objectives.
  • Manage NAT’s performance in meeting agreed objectives and ensure that quality is achieved in the delivery of plans through the development and implementation of standards, systems and procedures and regular evaluation.
  • Provide leadership to the Senior Management Team.
  • Set objectives, provide support and supervision and carry out appraisals for all staff reporting directly to the Chief Executive.

Financials

  • Responsible for the overall financial health and financial security of NAT; ensuring that income is generated and expenditure controlled in line with budgets as approved by the Board.
  • Oversee the fiscal activities of NAT including budgeting, reporting and audit.
  • Ensure that NAT has the capacity to acquire the resources (human, material and financial) it needs to achieve its objectives. Ensure that NAT’s human, material and financial resources are used effectively and efficiently in meeting the organisation’s objectives.
  • Ensure NAT maintains and develops sound financial management systems.
  • Design, implement and monitor a viable fundraising plan, policies and procedures and regularly report progress to the Board.
  • Participate actively in identifying, cultivating, engaging and building long-term relationships with donors and donor organisations.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the public face and voice of NAT, representing the organisation effectively in public, political and high profile arenas.
  • Build and maintain public and stakeholder relations and visibility in all four administrations of the UK with Government and other parliamentarians, media, funders and potential funders and commissioners, regulatory authorities, advice agencies and other opinion formers in order to advance the Trusts aims
  • Ensure NAT is professionally represented in its relations with government, media and other key groups.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain co-operative relationships with all key constituencies, principal supporters, stakeholders and people living with HIV.
  • Act as an advocate for issues relevant to NAT and seek opportunities to expand and promote the role of the organisation.
  • Represent NAT to the media, including social media.
  • Ensure the development and implementation of an effective targeted communications strategy.

Governance

  • Work with the Chair and the Trustees to ensure they receive appropriate advice and information on all relevant matters to enable them to fulfil their governance responsibilities.
  • Support the Chair in ensuring the continued engagement/involvement of all members of the Board and its relationship with the executive team.
  • Advise on the composition of the Trustee Board, its committees and the process of self-assessment and development, as appropriate.
  • Ensure an annual calendar of meetings of the Board and its principal sub-committees is in place.
  • Fulfill Company Secretarial functions for NAT.
