In 2025, we estimate that 3.4 million people benefited from our work globally.

Founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, we have grown into a worldwide network with approximately 4 million, predominantly female members, in over 80 countries. What has never changed is where our strength lies: in our local members. They understand their communities, see the need around them, and respond in ways that are practical, compassionate, and rooted in faith.

Objects and Purpose

The objects of Mothers’ Union, as set out in its governing document, are to promote stable family life, support marriage and family relationships, protect children, and advance the Christian religion through prayer and practical action. These purposes fall within the charitable aim of the advancement of religion, alongside associated public benefit activities supporting families and communities.

Our Vision and Mission

We are driven by a simple but powerful vision: a world where God’s love is reflected in relationships that are loving, respectful, and life-giving.

Our mission is to put that faith into action. We work to strengthen family life, support families and individuals who are vulnerable, and help build relationships and communities that are stable, safe, and full of hope.

Our work is shaped by our Christian faith and guided by values of compassion, respect, integrity, and inclusion. We believe in the dignity of every person and in the importance of relationships that nurture and sustain individuals and communities alike. We serve people of all faiths or none.

Our Work

We deliver our work through a wide range of activities across its global network, responding to the needs of local communities.

Members provide practical support to individuals and families in a variety of contexts, including people experiencing hardship, isolation, or crisis. This includes supporting families during hospital stays, working with parents in prison, and assisting families with newborn or premature babies.

The charity’s work is focused around three core areas:

Ending Violence – promoting peace, safety, and reconciliation

Ending Injustice – advancing gender equality and social justice

Ending Poverty – fostering resilience and self-reliance

Programmes include literacy and savings groups, parenting and resilience training, and domestic abuse awareness initiatives, alongside a wide range of locally led activities. Mothers’ Union works in partnership with churches, communities, and other organisations where appropriate to extend its reach and impact.

What We Do

There is no single model or approach for Mothers’ Union’s work, it is shaped by the communities we serve. Across the world, our members are:

Supporting parents and caregivers through local initiatives

Encouraging literacy and access to education

Speaking out against gender-based violence and working for justice

Running community and income-generating projects

Offering pastoral support, prayer, and fellowship

In the UK and Ireland, this often happens through close links with churches and local communities. Internationally, our work is led locally, supported by partnerships that help communities build lasting, sustainable change.

Our Impact

Mothers’ Union is both global and deeply local. Each year, our programmes reach hundreds of thousands of people, but the real impact is seen in family and individual lives.

It’s found in the parent who feels better supported, the child who gains new opportunities, and the community that becomes stronger and more connected.

Looking Ahead

Mothers’ Union has a long and significant history, but our focus is firmly on the present and the future. We continue to listen, to adapt, and to respond to the changing needs of communities around the world.

At the heart of our work is a deep commitment to supporting the spiritual life of our members. Through prayer, fellowship, and shared faith, we equip and encourage one another to live out that faith in practical action: within families, communities, and wider society. This spiritual foundation underpins everything we do and sustains our global movement.

We are proud that, throughout our history, our advocacy and campaigning have contributed to real and lasting change: for families, for women, and for wider society. That legacy matters, and it shapes our ambition for the future.

We want to see Mothers’ Union reclaim a confident and visible voice within the Anglican Church and across the Anglican Communion, and increasingly beyond. We are determined to speak more clearly and more boldly on the issues that affect women and family life, and to be recognised as a trusted and respected voice not only within the Church, but in wider public life, including at government level.

For too long, the voices and experiences of women have been unheard or overlooked. We believe this is the time to step forward, contributing to conversations, influencing change, and ensuring that lived experience helps shape the decisions that affect families and communities. Our global network places us in a unique position to inform and strengthen this work.

At the same time, we are committed to growing and strengthening our membership, ensuring that Mothers’ Union remains a place of belonging where people feel connected, valued, and proud to be part of a global movement rooted in faith and action.

With a strong sense of purpose, a clear voice, and a dedicated membership, we are confident in our ability to deepen our impact, grow our membership, extend our reach, and play a more influential role in the years ahead.

["post-10","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
