Role Description

Job Title:                     CEO of Mothers’ Union
Hours:                          35 hours per week
Salary:                          £110,000 per annum
Contract Length:       Permanent
Reporting to:               Worldwide President (WWP)
Direct Reports:           Six (Director of Finance & Services, Director of Global Programmes, Director of Membership, Acting Director of Communications, Interim Lead for Fundraising & Retail, and Executive Assistant to CEO & WWP)

Purpose

Mothers’ Union is a global, women-led Christian movement of over 4 million members worldwide, who put their faith into action by doing what is needed, and where it is needed to support families of all faiths and none in their local communities. Working collectively, our aims are to end injustice, poverty and violence, so that everyone can prosper.

The CEO leads the central secretariat to support delivery of our mission, facilitates relationships across the movement and engages with stakeholders to strengthen the profile of the movement and access resources, whether financial or through partnerships.

Areas of work

Strategy

  • To facilitate the creation and delivery of a long-term vision and medium plan to deliver the missional vision, together with the global worldwide leadership and staff team.

Operational Delivery

  • To create, resource, deliver and monitor annual operational plans delivered by the staff team, which are aligned to the vision and long-term strategy.

Leadership

  • To motivate, inspire and support staff as well as members working as volunteers in the delivery of plans.
  • To ensure that the small staff team fully understands the collective objectives and works cross-functionally as needed to deliver our shared goals.

Management

  • To ensure that systems and processes are in place and adhered to which comply with Charity law, and to manage the day-to-day operations of the central charity, with and through the Senior Leadership Team, in line with plans and available budget.

Governance

  • Together with the Chair of the Board, to ensure that both Board members and staff are clear on their respective roles and responsibilities.
  • To periodically review the Constitution of the charity to ensure that it remains in line with United Kingdom (UK) Charity Law and is fit for purpose to meet the needs of the membership; if necessary, recommend any changes to the Board.
  • To be a source of governance expertise for the affiliated provinces and dioceses.
  • To run the triennial Board elections.
  • To support the Chair and Board by drafting agendas which align with the strategic and operational objectives of the charity, and providing the Board, through the staff team, timely papers to enable informed decision making.
  • To advise on, and support the running of appropriate sub-committees, with clear terms of reference.

Safeguarding

  • To demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding and hold overall executive responsibility for ensuring robust safeguarding leadership, culture, policies, and compliance across the organisation and its international partnerships.
  • The role is subject to safer recruitment procedures, including satisfactory references and an enhanced DBS check where appropriate.

Ambassadorial

  • To represent the Charity with key stakeholders, particularly within the membership and the Anglican Communion, with charities with similar aims and objectives and with key donors.

Advocacy

  • To represent the issues of importance to the membership in key forums, for example with the UK Government, and international bodies such as the United Nations, building the profile and influence of the movement.

Communications

  • To clearly and enthusiastically communicate the aims and objectives, long-term vision and impact of the movement with members across the UK and the globe, staff and stakeholders at all possible opportunities.
  • As required, to act as spokesperson for the movement with the media.

Relationships

  • Together with the WWP and staff, to foster strong relationships across the movement, creating an environment which enables members to connect with one another, learn from each other, and develop collective expertise to support the communities they serve.

Resources

  • To set out and help to deliver plans to enable resourcing of the work of the movement, whether financial or through strategic partnerships.
  • To actively reach out to partner with agencies in attracting resources to build on and promote programmatic work across the globe.

Horizon Scanning and Environment Monitoring

  • To monitor trends in the environment (within the Church, geopolitical, charity sector), identify risks, brief the Board and recommend mitigating actions.

Membership support

  • To provide resourcing for the global membership, resourcing them in their activities and helping them to reach out to attract new members and supporters.

Work Location/Hybrid Working Pattern

  • This role will be based at the Head Office, Mary Sumner House, in central London.
  • Mothers’ Union operates a hybrid working model.
  • Staff are required to work an aggregate minimum of 90 days per calendar year (pro rata for part timers) at the Head Office in central London.
  • Tuesdays are anchor days when every staff member is expected to be at the office.
  • The 90 days includes anchor Tuesdays.
  • In addition, Thursday is a core working day where part time staff are expected to work, either at home or from the office as needed.
