Since Mencap was in 1946 by Judy Fryd, a mother of a child with a learning disability, we have driven genuine change around how people with a learning disability are valued, heard, and included in society.

People with a learning disability and the people we support are at the heart of everything we do at Mencap. They shape our work and help deliver it.

There are three main things we do at Mencap:

We provide the support and services people with a learning disability need to live their lives to the full.

We work with individuals, families and partners to create inclusive communities.

We campaign for a fairer society and provide vital information and advice.

The focus of the organisation is determined by the views, needs, and dreams of people with a learning disability. The Board of Trustees are also directly advised by the Voices Council. The Council is a group of 12 people with a learning disability who provide insight, leadership and advice to Mencap on its strategic direction and activities.

Mencap is one of the largest social care providers for people with a learning disability in the UK. Total income in the last financial year was £244m. Mencap has over 7,500 employees across England, Wales and Northern Ireland; and 90 registered locations.

Our recently launched five year strategy, Mencap 2030, sets out how the organisation will support people with a learning disability to succeed in the things that matter to them. It is a bold and aspirational vision for the change we want to see. Mencap strives for a world where everyone with a learning disability lives life to the full. Our purpose or mission is to support people with a learning disability to thrive at every stage of their life.

Working with individuals, communities, and society, the breadth of our focus at Mencap demonstrates an ambition to drive positive change to the lives of people with a learning disability. Deep understanding of the individuals we support informs and amplifies influencing at both grassroots and national policy levels.

Mencap works with 119 local authorities, delivering quality care and support to communities across the country. In the last financial year, Mencap supported over 3,300 people with a learning disability through social care services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Nearly 800 people have been supported from Mencap’s employment and training services to get people jobs, work experience, supported internships and skills through differing programmes. Around 100 children and their families have also been supported in the Early Years Centre.

Mencap has a strong brand and relationships with key external partners and in Government. The organisation celebrates its role as leading real change in how people with a learning disability are living better lives. But there is still much to do. There are still people who have a learning disability who are living in inappropriate hospital settings, often a long way from home and the people that they love. Life expectancy for people with a learning disability is poor, and nearly two decades lower compared to their nondisabled peers. Even after over 75 years of passionate campaigning, many people who have a learning disability still feel discriminated against. These challenges are further amplified by a health and social care sector that is facing severe challenges around tightening government budgets, a challenging labour market where the skills needed do not match needs, cost of living and inflationary pressures.

Mencap is led by Chief Executive, Jon Sparkes OBE, who reports to the Board of Trustees – a diverse group of industry leading professionals who are committed to the mission and purpose of Mencap. The Board welcomed a new Chair at the beginning of 2026, Lynne Peacock, an experienced leader in the charity and commercial sectors, and former Chair of Learning Disability Network London. At Mencap, at least half of our trustees have a lot of experience of learning disabilities because of their personal, voluntary or professional experiences. At least one of our trustees must be a person with a learning disability.

Our Values

["post-10","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
