Role Description

Director of finance and resources

Hours: Full time (37.5 hours per week).
Contract Type: Permanent.
Salary: £87,105 – £101,622.
Annual Leave Entitlement: 27 days plus bank holidays, increasing after 5 years and 10 years service.
Reports to: Chief Executive.
Direct Reports: Management accountant, Grants and funds accountant, Information and data analyst.
Probation Period: 6 months.
Notice Period: 3 months.
Place of Work: Provost Street N1, with flexibility to work part of the week from home (minimum two days a week in the office).

About the Role

Lead and manage the financial and resources strategy of Moorfields Eye Charity (the charity) to achieve fundraising growth targets of £10m+ annual income by 2027-28, grow grant-making and support strategic initiatives like the £100m philanthropic contribution to the Oriel building project. Oversee all financial operations, risk management, IT, HR, investments and facilities, contributing to the charity’s overall strategic success.

This multifaceted leadership role demands financial acumen, strategic foresight, and a collaborative approach to ensure the charity meets its ambitious goals and continues its impactful work.

Working alongside the Chief executive and other members of the senior leadership team, the Director of finance and resources is a key strategic and operational role working at the heart of the charity.

The role is currently responsible for a team of five staff. The business plan has provision to increase the team with an IT manager and an HR officer, who would also be direct reports.

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement robust financial strategies, including multi-year plans, to achieve ambitious fundraising and grant-making goals.
  • Lead the creation, monitoring, and delivery of the charity’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Develop financial policies, KPIs, and reporting frameworks to support informed decision-making by the CEO and Board.
  • Oversee risk management processes, ensuring comprehensive assessment and reporting to support effective governance.
  • Lead the development and implementation of an IT strategy, ensuring systems meet organizational needs.
  • Lead business continuity including planning/alternatives/back-ups/insurance, to ensure effective operations despite physical, cyber or other incidents.
  • Play an active role, under the direction of the Chief executive, and with senior leadership team and management group colleagues in shaping the future direction of the charity and drive demonstrable sustained philanthropic growth.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and motivate the finance and resources team (currently 5 excluding self), creating a positive and collaborative working environment and championing best practice, and in particular motivating and empowering direct reports to support their staff management.
  • Set ambitious targets, KPIs and support and inspire individuals to achieve them.
  • Provide effective performance management so that all members of the team understand their role within the broader strategy, as well as their team and own objectives.
  • Foster a culture of enablement and a strong work ethic among the team, alongside a commitment to individual responsibility, a solution-focused approach to all work, and collaborative and mutually-supportive working with other charity teams/staff.

Financial Operations

  • Oversee financial controls, ensuring the accuracy of income, expenditure, and grant-related transactions.
  • Provide guidance on establishing new funding streams, managing funds, and optimizing financial processes.
  • Provide guidance to the Fundraising and communications and Grants and research teams on the creation of new funds and the management of restricted funds and special purpose funds.
  • Manage legacy administration (in collaboration with the Legacy development manager).
  • Lead relationship with the charity’s bankers, ensuring quality of service and timely reconciliation.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, ensuring the timely preparation and audit of statutory accounts.
  • Work with investment managers overseeing £60m+ in assets, providing integrated performance reports against benchmarks.

IT and Data Systems

  • Advise on strategic direction and innovations in information systems to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Manage the IT infrastructure.
  • Manage data governance, analysis and reporting.
  • Oversee/support the procurement, testing, and deployment of new systems, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Oversee/support training, reporting tools, and troubleshooting to maximize the use of IT systems.

Human Resources and Payroll

  • Partner with the Chief executive to develop and maintain employment policies compliant with legislation and aligned with best practices.
  • Ensure robust payroll processes are in place, ensuring accurate and timely payment to employees.
  • Oversee the administration of auto-enrolment pensions and NHS Pension schemes for eligible staff.
  • Maintain a comprehensive register of employment contracts, ensuring compliance and accessibility.
  • Lead on provision and effective operation of HR support systems and services.

Governance and Reporting

  • Design and deliver financial reports that provide clear insights into performance and strategy.
  • Collaborate with other teams to enhance and integrate reporting from CRM system, grants management system and financial systems.
  • Prepare trustees annual reports in partnership with the Chief executive, ensuring clarity and alignment with statutory requirements.
  • Act as lead officer for Audit & risk and Investment committees, managing their operations and supporting the chairs.

Offices

  • Ensuring appropriate property/offices and associated services are provided for the operation of the charity, including the development and maintenance of operational, health and safety policies and procedures.

Corporate Leadership

  • Contribute to the overall strategic management of the charity as a member of the senior leadership team and management group.
  • Promote effective cross-functional collaboration, aligning Finance & resources with broader organizational goals.
  • Serve as a key representative for the charity, deputizing for the Chief executive when required.
  • Lead on a specific cross-cutting theme, driving innovation and operational excellence within the charity.
  • Attend board meetings.

Other duties

  • Any other duties as may be requested from time to time by your line manager.
  • Ensure that all activities are compliant with law, best practice and the charity’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensure you treat everyone with dignity and respect and adhere to, and champion, the charity’s EDI policy and values.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work as required.
  • As a member of the charity team to conduct your work and self to a high standard of professionalism and timeliness, being responsible and polite with all stakeholders. To be collaborative with, and considerate and supportive of colleagues as we work together to meet the common goal of delivering the charity’s strategy to maximum impact.
