Role Description – Chief Executive Officer

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy

  • Work with trustees and the SLT to develop and deliver our next ten-year strategic plan in line with the Trust’s Quaker identity and core mission.
  • Address issues of historical legacy by supporting the board of trustees in the design and implementation of an appropriate plan to meet commitments to forms of reparation which further our charitable purposes.

Governance and financial management

  • Monitor strategic risk effectively. Continue to refine and improve shared practice around risk management and holding high-risk work with care.
  • With the Head of Finance and Investment, accountability to the trustee board for oversight and management of the endowment and the spend from it.
  • Continue to improve the Trust’s approach to governance and compliance, fostering an attitude of transparency and openness.
  • Support the process of trustee recruitment and succession planning as required.
  • Attendance at Trust Quarterly Meetings (in person).

Grant-making

  • Work closely with the Head of Programmes to ensure their teams are accountable and empowered to deliver the effective day to day running of the Trust’s grant-making, meeting the delivery of operational plans.
  • Ensure, with the Head of Programmes, that grant-making teams hold accurate data and records to underpin JRCT’s grant-making function and ensure compliance with internal processes as well as external regulations.
  • Oversight of any programme policy / strategy reviews, with the Head of Programmes, and in consultation with the trustee board.

People management and organisational culture

  • Provide ‘hands on’ leadership to a small but geographically diverse staff team, including line management for a senior team.
  • With the Head of People and Operations, facilitate the recruitment of appropriately skilled staff and recommend appropriate remuneration levels to the board of trustees.
  • With the Head of People and Operations, provide clear direction for team members about their roles, objectives and how each individual contributes to JRCTs vision and mission.
  • Nurture staff development and establish clear pathways to support effective succession planning.
  • Create a culture of collaboration and communication across teams, ensuring staff and trustees are updated on key organisational issues in a timely manner via effective internal communications.
  • Safeguarding: To respond to and manage safeguarding incidents sensitively, and promptly as they arise. to ensure all staff and trustees are aware of their safeguarding responsibilities and receive adequate training and support.

External representation

Support the head of communications to develop and implement JRCT’s communications strategy, ensuring alignment with broader organisational goals and integration within the organisational structure.

  • Build and maintain supportive and responsive relationships with key stakeholders including co-opted committee members, grantees and external or professional advisors and other networks.
  • Be a key spokesperson, ambassador and advocate for JRCT and the work of those we fund. Promote the work of JRCT and represent the organisation in public arenas and via the media as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other organisations to represent the Trust on issues of importance.
  • Champion JRCTs Quaker values and clearly communicate JRCT’s mission and strategic goals.
