Job Description

The Executive Director, Audiences & Public Engagement will lead our engagement strategy and the teams focused on engaging and growing existing and emerging audiences. With an exceptional understanding of museum pedagogy and a proven ability to develop compelling programmes with diverse audiences, the Executive Director, Audiences & Public Engagement will be responsible for determining the ways that IWM engages with diverse physical and digital audiences, locally, nationally and internationally, in support of IWM’s purpose and vision. Leading a team of over c70 professionals and working closely with the Executive Director, Collections & Curation, the post holder is accountable to the Executive Team and Trustees.

  3. IWM Institute
  4. Learning & Engagement
  5. Audience Insight

Responsibilities & Key Duties

  • Strategic Vision and Leadership:
    • Collaborate with the wider Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Trustees to set strategic goals and objectives, including the successful delivery of the Purpose & Vision project
    • Work in close collaboration with the Executive Director, Collections and Curatorial, to develop and implement strategies that manifest and promote IWM’s purpose and vision
    • Provide visionary leadership
  • Operational Management:
    • Oversee day-to-day activities, ensuring efficient operations
    • Improve performance across all departments
    • Develop and maintain organisational culture
    • Ensure alignment with the other Executive Leaders and functions to meet the strategic goals
    • promote collaborative working relationships throughout IWM
  • Financial Management:
    • Manage budgets, financial planning, and resource allocation
    • Monitor expenses and create long-term plans for future expenses, in line with agreed audience engagement plans
    • Make data-driven decisions to ensure IWM acts using objective criteria
  • Stakeholder Relations:
    • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including partners, investors, and community members, to ensure IWM remains relevant to all audiences through its audience engagement
    • Oversee the delivery of effective and integrated communications and PR across all five IWM branches, covering corporate, public programming and commercial activities, to meet IWM’s targets and priorities
    • Oversee proactive and reactive reputation and crisis management and planning
    • Represent the organisation externally
  • Team Leadership:
    • Provide guidance and coaching to subordinate managers
    • Demonstrate and expect high standards from all team members
    • Foster an effective team of leaders and grow future talent
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Implement strategic plans for organisational development and crisis management
    • Ensure alignment with long-term goals
    • Develop a strategic plan for audience engagement that maintains engagement with existing audiences, understands and adjusts for new audiences and prepares for emerging audiences with insight and sensitivity

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of museum pedagogy and a proven ability to innovate
  • Proven experience as an executive director/senior manager in the cultural space
  • Knowledge and appreciation of social history, collections, and models of public discourse
  • Experience of identifying, developing and delivering activity for and with diverse audiences
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic plans
  • Demonstrable understanding of budgeting and performance metrics
  • Knowledge of corporate governance principles
  • Excellent communication, management and leadership skills
