The role of Chief of Staff  (CoS) will lead the IWM Chief of Staff office and deliver a range of tasks associated with strategic planning, stakeholder and partner management and the leadership of cross-functional projects as determined by the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) from time to time. The role holder will plan coordinate and prepare the corporate plan for approval working with functional colleagues to ensure the plan meets the IWM’s objectives. The role holder will ensure the planning process evolves to maintain a contemporary approach to planning cycles and recommend adaptions and changes to the plan.

The role holder will lead on stakeholder and partner relations working with the DG and functions to ensure our key stakeholders and partners are engaged and informed.

The CoS will coordinate the Operational Delivery Group and ensure that the team functions in line with its terms of reference and meets the IWM objectives as set by ELT. The role holder will have a specific focus on a ‘no silo’ approach and ensure cross-functional alignment with all goals. The CoS will take responsibility for coordinating communication of the Corporate Plan and the resulting objectives throughout the organisation. The ODG mandate is to deliver the strategy as agreed at ELT and in line with IWM’s long-term strategic plans.

The role holder will work with the DG to ensure the executive agenda meets operational standards is fit for purpose and meets objectives. The CoS will attend ELT meetings and manage the ELT calendar.

The role will not own the resources but will mainly work through others using influence, and relationship management skills to impact the progression of actions and outcomes.

Responsibilities & Key Duties

  • Strategic Vision and Leadership:
    • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Trustees to develop strategic goals and objectives.
    • Coordinate and produce a coherent corporate plan that aligns with IWM objectives to deliver the aims and outcomes of the organisation.
    • Design and manage the strategic/corporate planning process to ensure that the plan is driven throughout the organisation.
    • Work with ELT and ODG to refine the plan and work with the leadership teams to ensure IWM stays on track and achieves the planned outcomes.
    • Work with AD Resources and AD Governance to ensure the strategy and priorities translate into the Annual Report and Corporate Plan for DCMS and third parties.
  • Operational Management:
    • Maintain excellent relationships with partners and stakeholders and work alongside functions and DG to ensure we provide a broad experience for these important relationships.
    • Project manage cross-functional projects as and when appropriate.
    • Lead the ODG and ensure it keeps to its terms of reference and operates a ‘no silo’ approach to collaborative working. Report on ODG activities to ELT.
    • Ensure alignment with ODG objectives, ELT objectives and the corporate plan. The corporate plan needs to directly align to objective setting within the organisation and the CoS will work with HR to ensure this happens.
    • Skilfully escalate issues and ODG underperformance to other executives to course correct.
  • Financial Management:
    • Understand budgets and finance.
    • Monitor expenses and create long-term plans for future expenses in line with agreed plans.
    • Make data-driven decisions to ensure IWM acts using objective criteria.
  • Stakeholder Relations:
    • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including partners and community leaders to ensure IWM remains relevant.
    • Represent the organisation externally.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Provide guidance and coaching to subordinate managers.
    • Expect exacting standards from all team members.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Develop and implement strategic planning for organisational development.
    • Ensure alignment with long-term goals.
