Welcome

Thank you for your interest in joining the Institute for Government (IfG).

The IfG is the UK’s leading independent think tank working to make government more effective. Through in-depth and rigorous analysis, practical recommendations, expert commentary and influential public events we explore how government can work better.  We act as a catalyst to inspire the best in government – sparking ideas, generating debate, challenging preconceptions, and making new connections to improve government for the benefit of society. And we are always looking for the best talent to help us fulfil our mission.

This is an important moment to consider joining the Institute: 2026 will be a crucial year for good government. As the new Labour administration gets into its stride in an ever more challenging economic, domestic and geopolitical context, the IfG has never been in a more powerful position to influence UK government for the better. With committed support from our core funder – the Gatsby Foundation, Sir Ian Cheshire taking over as Chair of our Board, and a planned move to a new, purpose-designed home in the heart of Westminster on the horizon, the Institute is moving from strength to strength.

We are now in the exciting position of recruiting for a trio of senior roles to help lead the Institute into the next phase of its existence. Replacing our previous model of a Deputy Director who managed, among others, a Director of Impact, we are creating two new Executive Director roles, one responsible for Research and Innovation, and one for Impact and Influence. These two roles will sit alongside our Executive Director: Operations, forming – together with the CEO – our new Executive team. The third role we are looking to fill is the Director of our IfG Academy – who will be responsible for leading the development of our highly successful new learning and development arm into its exciting next phase.

The Institute’s fantastic team works in a fun, stimulating and challenging environment at the heart of Westminster. Wellbeing is very important to us and we’re proud of our friendly, supportive workplace culture.  We recognise the benefit that having a team with a broad range of backgrounds and experience brings to our work and are committed to attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce and inclusive working environment. We welcome applications from anyone with the passion and skills to make a contribution to our work.

I do hope you’ll consider applying to join our team.
