Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the University of Exeter, we are delighted to share this exciting opportunity to join our university.

At Exeter, we seek to create a community where students and staff stand together, learn from one another, and empower each other to challenge discrimination and harassment. It is both an individual and collective imperative for us. As Vice-Chancellor, I am committed to leading our university in ensuring that ours is an environment that supports and values diversity and promotes equality of opportunity.

The University serves a multitude of stakeholders. Our members – students, staff, alumni, and trustees – are what make the University. Our activity reaches out locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. We are an important part of our local community in Devon and Cornwall, making a significant economic contribution, working with local partners such as the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, the Exeter Mathematics School and Exeter City and Cornwall County Council as well as working with local and national employers. We have sought to increase the international outreach of our culture and inclusion work through partnerships, including our work with the National Centre for Cultural Competence at Georgetown University.

In collaboration with our regional partners, we are committed to confronting prejudice and discrimination, calling it out in our communities and standing up for what is right. We all have a role to play. This Assistant Director (Culture and Inclusion) role working alongside Imelda Rogers, Director of HR, is a step towards our commitment to work in partnership with our staff and student networks, societies, and regional partners, to hear about lived experiences, to make tangible progress and to increase the pace of change.

We want our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion to underpin how we operate, how we think about our strategies, how we implement our goals and how we interact and communicate at all levels. We seek to create a compassionate community where we stand with our colleagues and friends and challenge discrimination in all its forms – always. Our aim is to learn from instances where we did not get things right and work in partnership with our community and organisations across the region to ensure that we are a leading voice in the drive to make Devon and Cornwall more diverse, inclusive, and supportive for all. We are looking for people with a strong record of accomplishment of working collaboratively with internal and external partners and delivering impactful change to facilitate a truly inclusive, welcoming, and compassionate culture.

This role will work closely with Prof. Janice Kay, Provost and Chair of Wellbeing, Inclusion and Culture Board, to enable us to challenge ourselves on the progress we are making towards supporting and empowering our diverse community and towards becoming a culturally competent institution.

We are determined that the University of Exeter learns from past experiences and builds partnerships with students, colleagues, and organisations to guide our development through the period of our new Strategy 2030 and make lasting changes for generations to come.
