Welcome

Thank you for your interest in becoming our new Diocesan Secretary.

The vision of Bath and Wells is ‘to live and tell the story of Jesus’ in the wonderful place we are called to serve. While two thirds of the diocese is rural, more than half our population lives in urban areas such as Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton, Bridgwater and Yeovil.  Health and social care, retail, manufacturing, tourism, education, power generation and farming are among our main employers. We encompass areas of both great wealth and of considerable material poverty. We have a rich history, beautiful landscapes and amazing people blessed with an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds, experiences, skills and abilities.

Our new Diocesan Secretary will join us as a fresh chapter in our story begins. I have only recently become the diocesan bishop. As we emerge from the tumult of the last two years of pandemic there’s a sense that a renewed team and ways of working need to emerge that can support the life of our churches and communities as we encounter a context that is changed, transformed and that will keep on changing. As we look to the future together we’re seeking a colleague who is creative, strategic, innovative, faithful and collaborative. As the chief lay officer of our diocese, our new diocesan secretary will be someone who can support and enable the work of our diverse and talented diocesan team. We’re looking for someone who can help us all grasp the opportunities that lie before us as well as respond to our pressing challenges of growth and sustainability. Mission and outreach are going to be key priorities for our work, as well as engagement with children, families and young people and our ongoing response to the climate emergency.

We’re looking forward to being joined by a colleague who will join with us in learning what it is to live faithfully as God’s people in our days so that together we can encourage, challenge and help one another. If you think this role might be for you, or if you want to know more, please do contact us for a conversation.
