Person Specification – Chair of the Diocese in Europe Diocesan Board of Finance

  • Experience in a senior corporate capacity (private, charity or public sector), preferably with a high degree of financial responsibility.
  • Sympathy for the aims and objectives of the Church of England so comfortable in a church setting (not necessarily an active church member).
  • A qualified accountant.
  • Some exposure, as a trustee or senior employee, to the work of a charity board.
  • Proven ability as a chair who is able to balance views and reach positive decisions in meetings both online and in person.
  • A keen interest in and ideally some experience of working in an international European context.
  • Able to give advice from an objective perspective as well as to listen and learn in a new and unusual context.
  • A good eye for detail.
  • Empathy with volunteers and trustees from a very wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Time Commitment and Travel

  • Attend and chair meetings (normally half a day) on around 10 days in the year.
  • Calls and preparation time for meetings normally with the Diocesan Secretary.
  • Hours required to read and review the Annual Report.
  • One visit to Cologne each June for 2 days for the AGM of Members.
  • One visit most years for a day in Brussels with the Bishop and the Bishop’s Staff.
  • Available for a relatively small number of other consultations.
  • There is not an expectation of travel around the diocese although the chair may wish to visit chaplaincies when in the diocese or for particular events.
  • Attendance at the biannual national level one day meeting of the Inter Diocesan Finance Forum is possible but not essential.
