Welcome

The Church Commissioners play an important role in enabling the Church of England’s mission and we look forward to hearing from people who feel their professional gifts and personal commitment equip them to join with us in fulfilling our demanding yet exciting duties.

The Third Commissioner has particular responsibilities in relation to Bishops, Cathedrals, the Mission and Pastoral Measure and our important Net Zero agenda. We are at a time of significant change and transformation, as the national Church’s governance review progresses towards implementation, and the Third Commissioner will play a key role in ensuring these functions are managed smoothly through this transition.

Flora Winfield has given us highly effective leadership across all these areas, and with her appointment as the Bishop of Selby we are looking for her successor, who will oversee these functions for the final stages of this journey, so we are keen to speak to people with experience of leading change, particularly culture change. As a senior figure in the national Church, the Third Commissioner leads by example, setting the tone for trustees and staff, supporting our values and ensuring everyone feels they belong here.

You will find details of the responsibilities of the role in the following pages. More broadly, the Third Estates Commissioner will be instrumental in enabling a flourishing, growing Church of England which is relevant to the Country, the Church and all communities in the 21st century.
