The IRIS project: Liverpool’s pioneering support service for sex workers<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you support some of the most marginalised women in society, flexibility isn\u2019t a luxury \u2013 it\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n

Traditional drug services are necessarily designed around structure, appointments and processes. But when you\u2019re meeting women in the middle of a red-light district late at night, explains\u00a0Julie Smedley, who leads IRIS: River Liverpool\u2019s sex worker support service, \u201cthat model doesn\u2019t always fit. Drug and alcohol harm in the criminal justice system often starts well before prison. It can be exacerbated through short sentences that disrupt lives and treatment plans; long gaps between arrest and support; and a system which could focus more on prevention.<\/p>\n

With the escalating crises within the sector \u2013 from delays in cases getting to court, to severe overcrowding \u2013 we knew that we had to step up and figure out where small changes could make big difference.<\/p>\n
