Purpose of the Job: To support the Chief Executive and Board in the strategic financial direction of the Trust and to have operational responsibility for the provision of financial, investment and all resource services, including HR, IT and office facilities.

Reports to: Chief Executive of the Barrow Cadbury Trust

Line manages:

  • Head of Social Investment
  • Finance Officer
  • Operations Officer
  • Elements of the workload of the Internal Affairs Manager (HR)
  • Contractors and consultants providing HR and IT support

Role Overview

The Director of Finance and Administration is a pivotal, senior leadership position responsible for guiding the financial strategy and operational management of the Barrow Cadbury Trust. The role involves providing strategic financial advice to the Chief Executive and Board, preparing budgets and accounts, and ensuring compliance with legal and accounting standards. The Director will lead a team that includes finance and operations staff, manage the HR function, and ensure efficient office and IT services. They will also work closely with the Head of Social Investment to develop both our own social investment portfolio and the wider social investment market.  Key responsibilities also include liaising with our (external) investment manager and other investors to ensure our investments are aligned with our mission, and representing the Trust in various investment and financial forums including networks and coalitions of responsible investors. The ideal candidate will possess a professional financial qualification, significant experience in financial management, and a commitment to social justice. You may not yet have experience of shareholder activism or social investments but you will share our appetite for all of these and more.

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Provide sound financial advice to the trustees, Chief Executive and other senior management and contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust.
  2. As a member of the Executive Team contribute to the development of the whole organisation and providing positive leadership to staff.
  3. Prepare annual budgets and regular financial forecasts, ensuring that key assumptions in the Trust’s financial plans are sound and accurate.
  4. Ensure that accurate and appropriate monthly management accounts are prepared and distributed, and prepare financial reports for quarterly Trustee Board Meetings.
  5. Ensure that sound financial procedures and controls are in place and are regularly reviewed.
  6. Manage the Finance Officer to undertake the book-keeping, reconciliations, payments of grants, salaries and other costs.
  7. Prepare the annual financial statements in accordance with legal requirements, standard accounting practice and Trust policies.
  8. Prepare for and coordinate the annual audit and organise the appointment of auditors.
  9. Liaise with the external investment manager to monitor the investment portfolio and financial return, ensuring that the investments align with the Trust’s Responsible Investment Policy.
  10. Work with other investors, networks and coalitions to ensure that our investments promote social justice through shareholder activism.
  11. Oversee the use of social investments as an additional source of finance for social organisations and to develop the social investment market.
  12. Act as Company Secretary to the Barrow Cadbury Trust and Barrow Cadbury Fund, ensuring all statutory documentation is completed and submitted in accordance with legal requirements.
  13. Take strategic responsibility for the HR function within the Trust and ensure payroll and pensions are properly managed.
  14. Manage and regularly review service contracts to maintain value for money and efficient working.
  15. Lead on the development and maintenance of risk management strategies and register.
  16. Ensure the efficient management of the office facilities and IT support and development.
  17. Represent the Trust and promote social justice through outward facing events.
