It is our great pleasure to introduce this exciting opportunity to apply for the role of Chief Executive of Barnardo’s.
This is a very special charity, which plays a vital role in supporting some of the most vulnerable children, young people and families in the UK.
Barnardo’s has a rich history, deeply rooted in UK society, starting with the pioneering work of Dr Barnardo’s more than 155 years ago.
Today we work with children, families and communities to address some of the most serious challenges facing our society – from the crisis in children’s mental health, to the growing number of children entering the care system, to the risk of sexual abuse and exploitation facing children at home, online and in the community.
We have always believed in children, regardless of their background or circumstances. We work with hope, we value the unique worth of every individual, and we believe that with the right support, every child can achieve a positive future.
In 2020-21, in the face of unprecedented challenges resulting from the COVID pandemic, Barnardo’s reached over 380,000 children, young people, parents and carers, which is more than in any previous year. We did this across our 800 services and partnerships, across all four nations of the UK, and we work closely with national and local partners, including Government, local authorities, the NHS and the police, as well as corporate partners, philanthropists and foundations.
In addition to our services, Barnardo’s has over 650 retail shops, and we have just opened our first superstore in Coventry.
During the pandemic, everyone at Barnardo’s, from our senior leadership to our frontline workers, to our amazing volunteers have shown tremendous resilience, innovation and creativity. They adapted to changing needs and demands in a way that has set us up to thrive in the future – developing a ‘hybrid’ approach to service delivery that will help us to meet vulnerable children and families where they are, now and in the future.
Barnardo’s next Chief Executive will be an exceptional leader who is inspirational and collaborative in equal measure. It goes without saying that the values that guide the charity to achieve successful partnerships and support so many vulnerable children and young people will also be front and centre of the approach required to take Barnardo’s forward in the coming years. The successful candidate will have the support of a highly committed and experienced Board, and a high performing leadership team with deep and broad expertise.
This is a fantastic opportunity to lead one of the UK’s best-loved charities, at a time when our work is more important than ever before.
