This is an exceptional opportunity to take a central role in shaping the Academy at a pivotal moment and turning an ambitious vision for our future into reality. The role is critical to our success, and we want to appoint someone brilliant, collegiate and innovative who cares deeply about our mission and can enable us to become far more than the sum of our parts.
We are a charity as well as a National Academy. About a hundred staff and 1,600 Fellows work at the interface of science, policy and practice. We fund researchers and build careers, and last year put more than £20m of new funding behind clinical researchers. We advise government and Parliament on the decisions that shape health, and we published Measuring what matters, our first annual assessment of the state of UK medical science. We work on public trust in medical science at a point when misinformation is doing it real damage. We connect a community that runs from university labs through the NHS to industry, and we are building the pathway from UK discovery to patient benefit.
We need a senior leader who can shape our strategy, drive its operational delivery and ensure we have the most impact we can (and are able to describe it). We are looking for someone with a record of leading and building high-performing teams to enable them to consistently excel. Finally, we want to underline that the role is a key part of the Academy’s collective leadership: it sits on the executive team and we want someone who will work with the rest of the leadership team to make sure we are making the right decisions and adding up to more than the sum of our parts. In practice, this means that we are looking for someone who has high integrity and who is interested in the problems we are trying to solve and collaborative in working through how to do so.
